Insulation of window joints

To minimise heat losses around windows, the joints between the window frame and wall must be sealed with a construction foam. For window installation, it is important to choose a PU foam that has an elastic structure, and is therefore able to move with the building’s deformations, and which has excellent thermal- and sound-insulation values. Before applying the PU foam, the window must be mechanically fixed and supported according to the window manufacturer’s instructions. When applying the PU foam, the surfaces must be pre-moistened to ensure a uniform foam structure.

Window & Door Elastic Gunfoam 198 – a one-component polyurethane gun foam for installation works and sealing of pressure sensitive, movable joints and penetrations. Ensures airtight and soundproof sealing.

Alternative products: Window & Door Gunfoam 55 156 – a high yield one-component polyurethane gun foam for summer time window and door sealing and installation works. Adheres well to most common construction materials such as wood, concrete, stone, plaster, metal, PVC and polystyrene.

Window & Door Gunfoam 173 – a high yield all-season PU gun foam for window and door installation, and sealing joints, gaps and penetrations. Adheres well to most common construction materials such as wood, concrete, stone, plaster, metal, PVC and polystyrene.

Ensuring air- and vapour-tightness

To avoid heat losses, condensation and mould growth, the window and wall connecting joints should be sealed from the inside with air- and vapour-proof tapes or membrane.

Air&Vapour Membrane 660 – a fibre-reinforced mastic for sealing internal window and door joints. Forms an elastic, airtight and vapour-proof layer on sealed areas. Perfect for renovation works and sealing porous surfaces.

Air&Vapour Membrane 660

Improving wind-tightness

External seamless liquid membrane helps to protect the foam in window joint and building structure from accidental water ingress, moisture and ensure a windtight connection between the facade and window.

Airtight Membrane 704 –  a MS-polymer based liquid membrane for air- and waterproofing external window and door joints. Forms an elastic, seamless and vapour permeable layer on sealed areas. Excellent adhesion on many materials, e.g. concrete, bricks, PVC, ceramic tiles, metals, bitumen, EPDM, etc.

Filling and backing the window perimeter before weathersealing

The joint between window and wall is deep and sealing only the wall end does not give good insulation. For wider joint filling and to ensure the proper size and shape of sealant in the joint and avoid triple adhesion, a backer rod must be used.

Backer Rod PE 450 – a round backer rod with closed cell structure. Highly flexible and compressible for easy installation

Window perimeter weathersealing

A tight weatherproof joint between the window and wall protects the wall structure against wind, rain and snow. It also works as sound reducer. For long-lasting, weatherproof joints, a special facade sealant with high movement capability must be used to compensate for deformation in the joint without losing its elasticity or adhesion.

Facade Joint Hybrid 25LM – a completely weatherproof facade sealant to protect the structure from UV radiation, rain or snow, and wind. Can be overpainted with water-based paints.

External window sill installation and noise-reduction

Using adhesive foam in external window sill installation improves the window’s sound- and thermal insulation and helps to prevent the appearance of thermal bridges.

SpeedFix Construction 878 – a foam adhesive with EasyGun applicator for fixing exterior and interior insulation boards, windowsills, construction blocks, etc. Suitable for exterior and interior use. Excellent adhesive and thermal insulation properties

Protecting against wind, rain & snow

Adding sealant under the external window sill ensures a tight weatherproof joint between the external window sill and the wall to protect wall structures against wind, rain and snow. It also works as a sound reducer.

Facade Joint Hybrid 25LM – an MS polymer-based hybrid sealant for sealing and filling various exterior and interior joints. Perfect for joints that require high elasticity and weatherproofing.

Alternative product: Expanding Tape 300Pa – a pre-compressed elastic self-expanding polyurethane foam tape for sealing connection and expansion joints. After installation, the tape expands to fill the gap and creates a permanently elastic and airtight seal.

External window sill sealing

To guarantee a weatherproof window joint, it is important to remember to seal the external window sill with an elastic and weatherproof sealant.

Window & Door Silicone 312 – a multipurpose oxime silicone with high movement capability for interior and exterior building works. Forms a flexible and weatherproof silicone rubber seal.

Alternative products: Window & Door Silicone 302  – a multipurpose meko-free oxime silicone for glazing, filling and sealing works. Weatherproof formula with high movement capability and excellent adhesion on many materials.

Roof & Gutter  Sealant 919 – an immediately waterproof rubber-based sealant that is silicone free and can be used for quick repair works on facades and roofs, even during rain. Adheres well to most common roofing materials and can be applied even on wet, slightly oily or bituminous surfaces.

Installing construction boards to the window jamb

The easiest way to install construction boards to the window jamb is to use one of Penosil’s adhesive foams. The adhesive foam saves time, improves the window’s sound-and thermal insulation and helps to prevent the appearance of thermal bridges.

SpeedFix Construction 878 – a foam adhesive with EasyGun applicator for fixing exterior and interior insulation boards, windowsills, construction blocks, etc. Suitable for exterior and interior use. Excellent adhesive and thermal insulation properties

Sealing joints between window frame and window jamb

For this type of works, we recommend using sealants with high flexibility and using our patented spatula to apply the product. By strategically applying more sealant in the corners during installation, the joints can better withstand deformations. Despite efforts to minimise cracks, sealing work is often still necessary on-site due to the significant risk of cracks occurring during transportation.

SilAcryl Elastic 610 – a bright white, plasto-elastic, siliconized acrylic sealant for filling moveable gaps and joints before painting. Its bright white and extra-fine texture ensures smooth, perfectly finished and long lasting surfaces.

Sealing joints between windowsill and window frame

One of the last steps in window installation is the final sealing and filling of window joints. For this work, it is highly recommended to use sealants with the right properties and high elasticity.

Building Silicone 376 – a neutral silicone sealant with good movement capability and excellent adhesive properties. Forms a mould-proof and ageing-resistant flexible silicone rubber seal.
