Sanitary solution

Building and renovating bathroom and other sanitary rooms with high humidity and temperature requires special attention. The combination of moisture and warmth creates ideal living conditions for mould, and splashes of water on the floor or wall can harm the building’s structure. At the same time, the bathroom is a very personal room that needs to be clean, healthy and home-like.

When building or renovating damp rooms, special hydroinsulation products must be used to avoid moisture penetrating into structures and generating mould. Hydroinsulation products are applied straight onto the floor or wall (i.e., on stone, concrete, waterproof veneer, or other substrate) under the finishing layer (i.e., ceramic tiles, paint, coverings, etc.).

Below, we show you how to use Penosil products to make your sanitary rooms clean, hygienic and aesthetically pleasing.

Priming and strengthening subsurfaces

To ensure a strong bond between substructure and coating, a primer should be used on concrete, mortar, brick, stone and gypsum surfaces.

BetPrimer 603 – a water-based bonding dispersant for priming.

Moisture protection for humid areas

A protective layer needs to be created on the surface to protect the walls and ceilings against dampness before installing ceramic tiles, painting or other finishing.

HydroStop 644 – water-based liquid coating for the walls and ceiling of humid rooms to prevent moisture from permeating building structures. Can be used to protect substrates like gypsum board, concrete, plaster or brick.

Waterproofing wet areas before tiling

Waterproofing is very important to protect the structures of buildings from the harmful impact of water. Waterproofing mastic should be applied in two layers, with brush strokes in different directions to strengthen the mastic’s structure.

AquaBrake Fiber 640 – fibre-reinforced, ready-to-use, water-based compound for waterproofing the substrate under the floors and walls of wet rooms. A colour change indicates drying so that the different stages of the work can be started at the appropriate times.

Reinforcing corners, junctions and cut-throughs during waterproofing

Corners, junctions and cuts need additional reinforcement during waterproofing, and for this purpose special reinforcing fabric, or pieces with pre-cut shapes, can be used.

AquaBrake Fabric 435 – reinforcement fabric to enhance the effect of waterproof sealants and mastics.

AquaBrake Tape 431 – joint reinforcement patch

AquaBrake Patch 430 – floor trap reinforcement patch

AquaBrake Manchette 432 – pipe penetration reinforcement patch

AquaBrake Corner Patch In 434 – inner corner reinforcement patch

AquaBrake Corner Patch Out 433 – outer corner reinforcement patch

Filling joints and cracks before finishing

The purpose of filling the joints is not only aesthetic, but also to protect the building structure from the negative effects of moisture and temperature changes. The ideal joint filler is mould-resistant, has a fine structure, is elastic and can be easily coated with different paints.

Sanitary SilAcryl Elastic 633 – bright white, mould-resistant elastoplastic sealant. EC1+ certified formula for safe and convenient use.

Sealing joints in wet rooms

There are different joints in a bathroom that need to be protected from moisture, or even water. Some of these joints can be wide or movable, or even both. Sealing bathroom joints depends on a number of factors and it is important to consider them all.

Sanitary Silicone 313 – acid-curing joint sealant with high resistance to growth of microbiological organisms.

Backer Rod PE 450 – for backing the wider and movable joints to check the depth of the sealant and avoid triple adhesion.

Sealing joints of natural stone

Some materials used in interior design can be expensive and delicate, and high humidity must be considered in all work, even simple adhesion. For natural stone, a special sealant with no migration or staining must be used to keep the materials fresh and attractive.

Natural Stone Silicone 370 – high-quality silicone that resists mould, UV, moisture and high temperatures. Permanently elastic to withstand movements of the structure.

Installation and sealing of mirrors

Most common adhesives migrate through the delicate mirror surface, so a special product must be selected for gluing and sealing mirrors.

SpeedFix Mirror 736 – solvent-based adhesive with firm and rapid adhesion for installing mirrors and stained glass.

Renovating the bath tub

Traditional cast iron bathtubs are common in many countries. As they are convenient, keep water warm for a long time and are sometimes difficult to replace, it is worthwhile to renovate an old bathtub. This is not too complicated, but a manageable and exciting DIY project.

Penosil Bath Coating 500 – water-based epoxy paint set for restoring cast iron bathtubs and other enamelled surfaces. The set includes a primer and primer activator, paint and paint activator, 2 mixing sticks, plastic gloves, sandpaper for roughening the substrate, 2 foam rollers, a handle for the paint roller and application instructions.
